01 - Context - Why This GUIDE EXISTs

Why valve pricing varies

Two valves of the same size can differ in price by 10× depending on material, class, actuation and certification. Rather than publish misleading SKU prices, we explain the levers so you can self-qualify quickly.

02 - Drivers

The biggest pricing drivers

01 Material grade

What it is

Body and trim alloys (carbon steel, 316 SS, duplex, exotic).

How it affects price

Exotics and duplex can multiply price 3–8× vs carbon steel.

What to include in your RFQ

State exact ASTM/ASME grade and any NACE MR0175 requirement.

What it is

ANSI/ASME class (150–2500), PN10–PN420.

How it affects price

Higher class = thicker walls, more material, more testing.

What to include in your RFQ

Confirm working & design pressure, plus class.

What it is

Nominal size, full vs reduced bore.

How it affects price

Cost scales non-linearly above DN200; full bore costs more.

What to include in your RFQ

Specify DN/NPS and bore type.

What it is

Flanged (RF/RTJ), butt-weld, socket-weld, threaded.

How it affects price

RTJ and special facings add machining cost.

What to include in your RFQ

Provide flange standard and facing finish.

What it is

Manual lever/gear, pneumatic, electric, hydraulic.

How it affects price

Actuator can match or exceed valve cost; SIL ratings add more.

What to include in your RFQ

List actuator type, supply, fail position, accessories.

What it is

API 598, API 6D, fugitive emissions, cryogenic, PMI.

How it affects price

Witness testing and 3.2 certs can add 8–20%.

What to include in your RFQ

Specify required certs and witness party.

What it is

MOQ tiers and expedited production.

How it affects price

Expedite premiums of 15–35%; volume discounts at 50+ units.

What to include in your RFQ

Share quantity and required delivery date.

What it is

Process fluid, abrasives, sour service, cryo/HT.

How it affects price

Special seats/seals (PEEK, Inconel) shift cost band.

What to include in your RFQ

Describe media, temp range, particulate.

04 - Pitfalls

Common Valve Sourcing Mistakes

Common Mistake

Quick Fix

Incomplete pressure specifications

Valves are often requested without clear operating pressure, peak pressure, or temperature conditions.

Share operating conditions clearly

Include pressure range, temperature range, media type, and duty conditions so the valve can be matched correctly.

Choosing only on lowest price

Low-cost valves can create long-term reliability issues if material, sealing, and testing are not properly considered.

Balance cost with application fit

Compare price along with material grade, leakage requirement, testing level, and service conditions.

Missing end connection details

Incorrect thread type, flange standard, or weld-end detail can lead to installation and compatibility problems.

Confirm exact connection details

Share BSP, NPT, flanged, socket weld, butt weld, DIN, ANSI, or other required connection standards.

Unclear service media

A valve suitable for water may not be suitable for steam, chemicals, slurry, gas, or food-grade applications.

Mention the actual media

Share the fluid, temperature, concentration, contamination risk, and any corrosion or compatibility concerns.
