When you need to send flow one way or another, split it, combine it, or reverse it, the port pattern of a multi-port ball valve decides what is actually possible. Two valves with the same body and the same number of ports can behave completely differently depending on how the ball is drilled. The short answer: the letter describes how the ball is drilled and therefore how flow can be routed. An L-port 3-way valve diverts a common inlet to one of two outlets (a selector). A T-port 3-way valve can send flow straight through, divert it, or connect all three ports to mix or distribute. An X-port 4-way valve routes four ports in pairs and is used to reverse flow direction or circulation loops.
An L-port ball has an L-shaped bore, so it connects the common port to one of the two side ports at a time. Turn the valve and flow switches from one outlet to the other; it does not connect both outlets together.
A T-port ball has a T-shaped bore, which is more versatile. Depending on position it can allow straight-through flow with little pressure loss, divert to another direction, or open all three ports at once to combine or distribute flow.
A 4-way valve uses an X-drilled ball (effectively a double-L) to connect its four ports in pairs. Switching the valve swaps those pairings, which is what lets it reverse the direction of flow to and from an actuator or reverse a circulation loop.
