What counts as a “custom or special purpose” fitting?

Short answer

A custom or special purpose fitting is any fitting that does not exist as a standard catalog part: a non-standard thread combination, a multi-port manifold block, a mixed-material or plated-finish requirement, or a build matched to an existing sample rather than a published spec. Like custom valves, it is drawing-led rather than picked off a shelf.

When standard adapters and reducers do not cover it

  • The connection combines two thread standards that no standard adapter covers directly (for example, an uncommon BSP-to-metric or legacy OEM thread pairing).
  • You need a multi-port manifold block or tee/cross fitting with a specific port layout, not a simple two-ended adapter.
  • You are replacing an obsolete or discontinued fitting on older machinery and need a like-for-like match.
  • The application needs a specific material, plating, or surface finish (for food-grade, marine, or corrosive environments) beyond standard carbon steel or stainless options.
  • You need a non-standard length, bend angle, or body shape to fit an existing envelope.
