What counts as a “custom or special purpose” valve?

Short answer

A custom or special purpose valve is any configuration that does not fit a standard catalog listing: a non-standard port pattern, an integrated manifold block, a combination of functions in one body, an unusual material or pressure/temperature rating, or a build matched to an existing sample rather than a published spec. It is built from a drawing or sample, not picked off a shelf.

When a standard catalog valve does not fit

Most hydraulic circuits run fine on standard ball, needle, check, relief, or directional valves. A custom build becomes the right call when one or more of these apply:

  • The port pattern, thread, or flange does not match any standard catalog option (often the case with older or OEM-specific machinery).
  • Two or more functions need to live in a single body or manifold block to save space or simplify assembly.
  • The operating pressure, temperature, or media falls outside standard catalog ratings.
  • You are replacing an obsolete or discontinued valve and need a like-for-like match rather than a modern equivalent.
  • The application needs a modified internal geometry (orifice size, spring rate, flow characteristic) that a standard valve does not offer.
